The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities Presents: Back to School Week!
The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities has partnered with several of our Federal Agency Partners to present Back to School Week on September 19th-23rd 2016. This week-long celebration will bring federal agencies closer to HBCU students to highlight student opportunities in the government and shine a light on some of the work of the agencies. To reach as many HBCU students as possible, we will provide a mix of both in-person and virtual events. Be sure to read each event description as some require pre-registration. Come learn more about political appointees, who are federal employees appointed by the administration for a certain length of time, at various levels, to support and advocate the President’s political policies and goals. Description: This webinar, led by Howard Spivak, M.D., Principal Deputy Director of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), will provide an overview of the research fellowship opportunities provided by NIJ, including the Graduate Research Fellowship Program, W.E.B. DuBois Fellowship, Visiting Fellows Program, New Investigator/Early Career Program, and Research Assistantship Program. Description: This webinar, led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship, will provide students at HBCUs with an overview of Registered Apprenticeship (RA) programs. This program is not an unpaid internship; rather an opportunity for students to get a foot in the door at a company that supports in-house, upward mobility. The USDOL’s Office of Apprenticeship is collaborating with 260 colleges in its Registered Apprenticeship College Consortium (RACC), a network of RA programs and colleges that are in agreement to provide college credit for RA. In this presentation, students will learn about Registered Apprenticeship opportunities that exist in various industries such as in finance and insurance, healthcare, IT, and advanced manufacturing. Registered Apprenticeship experts from Denmark Technical College in South Carolina and a graduate of an IT Registered Apprenticeship will share information on the multiple benefits of apprenticeship programs for students at HBCUs. There will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the webinar.
