Get up to $50k to help your community thrive

The Norfolk Southern Foundation’s Thriving Communities Grant program is supporting nonprofits in 22 states with grants up to $50,000. They support projects that help folks in financial need, help folks struggling with mental health and substance abuse concerns, that strengthen identity and preserve historical elements in a community, and that beautify neighborhoods and improve shared spaces.

Norfolk Southern prioritizes funding for programs that support Thriving Communities, Workforce Development, Sustainability, and Safety within the communities they serve. Our VITA/TCE programs directly complement these priorities.

Through our partnership with IRS Stakeholder Partnerships, Education & Communication (SPEC), we:

• Strengthen Thriving Communities by returning critical tax refunds and credits (such as EITC and CTC) to low-to-moderate income families, increasing local economic impact.
• Support Workforce Development by training volunteers in tax law, ethics, and customer service—building valuable, transferable skills.
• Promote Financial Safety by educating taxpayers on fraud prevention, identity theft awareness, and responsible tax compliance.
• Encourage Economic Sustainability by improving long-term financial stability through accurate filing and financial education.

To pursue this grant opportunity, partners would need to:

• Maintain nonprofit (501(c)(3)) or eligible public entity status.
• Demonstrate measurable community impact (taxpayers served, refund dollars generated, volunteer engagement).
• Clearly align program outcomes with Norfolk Southern’s focus areas.

This funding could support outreach, equipment, volunteer training, site operations, and program expansion—allowing us to serve more taxpayers while advancing the SPEC mission.
