The U.S. Department of Education, White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities is seeking interns for Spring 2018!

This year-round volunteer Internship Program provides current HBCU students with an opportunity to learn more about HBCUs and their impact on the economy, higher education policy, federal funding opportunities, communications, and outreach. This internship will be based at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. The Initiative and Department will not sponsor travel or lodging.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collecting and compiling research and data related to HBCUs;
  • Participating in strategic planning meetings, staff meetings and other Department briefings and meetings relevant to the work of the Initiative;
  • Compiling meeting minutes;
  • Assisting and creating and/or updating presentations, fact sheets, one-pagers and talking points;
  • Greeting and escorting visitors to meetings;
  • Assisting with planning and implementation needs for upcoming local events and meetings, which can include collecting/researching background materials, creating promotional materials; and
  • Contributing to the creative efforts of the Initiative.

In addition, opportunities for developmental growth are welcomed and encouraged, such as informational meetings with senior Department officials and officials from external organizations.  Throughout the course of the internship students will have the opportunity to attend and potentially lead in the planning and management of meetings, briefings and other special events on the Hill, the White House and in other federal agencies. Duties also will vary slightly for students pursuing terminal degrees such as Ph.D. or E.D. Candidates.

  • Excellent oral, written, and editing communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access)
  • Takes initiative and proactively tackles responsibilities
  • Ability to work across networks

Duty Timeframe

  • Interns must be available to be in the office at least three days per week. Office hours can be negotiated.
  • Spring Internship will take place February-May

Eligibility

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or have a resident visa to apply.
  • You also must be enrolled part- or full-time in an accredited HBCU.

2018 OFC Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program

DO YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND LIKE TO THINK BIG?

Join us for an exciting three-day entrepreneurial training and app development experience! The OFC Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) Program is looking for 100 of the greatest young minds, who think critically, creatively, and are passionate about solving problems. Compete against your peers in a 72-hour workshop that will both challenge and reward you! Students will be tasked with developing solutions to business, social, or educational problems and then pitching their ideas to a panel of expert judges comprised of entrepreneurs, small business owners, executives, venture capitalists and other investors. Prizes have included an opportunity to attend Apple’s WWDC conference, Leadership Exchange Study Abroad Scholarship, Macbooks, and iPads to name a few.

The OFC Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference is an optimum opportunity for students to learn, engage in hands-on exercises, and develop the three C’s of an Entrepreneurial Mindset: Curiosity, Connections, and Creating Value.
