July 10 Release Event of OECD Report on Postsecondary CTE in the U.S.

The Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) of the U.S. Department of Education is pleased to announce the upcoming release of a special OVAE- and NCES-funded report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on the state of postsecondary career and technical education (CTE) in the United States.  This review is part of the OECD’s Skills beyond School project, which looks at the preparation of younger people and adults for technical and professional jobs through postsecondary education and training in more than 20 countries.  Research for the U.S. country report was conducted from May 2012 through March 2013 and included two visits to the United States and three state case studies (Florida, Washington and Maryland).  The study places the U.S. system for CTE in a comparative international context and assesses its strengths and challenges.

The New America Foundation and OECD will host a live release event of the U.S. country report in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, July 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. ET The New America Foundation will be live streaming the event on its website for anyone who is not able to attend in person.  Please click here to access the live stream on July 10.  No pre-registration is needed.

The release event will include a detailed overview of the main OECD findings and recommendations, as well as a series of expert panels to provide reactions to the report and its policy recommendations.  The panels, which will be comprised of subject matter experts, practitioners, and state and federal policymakers, will discuss issues around linking postsecondary CTE funding to outcomes; promoting high-quality credentialing standards; and smoothing transitions into, within, and out of postsecondary education and training into the labor market.  These discussions will include representatives from the Department of Education, state community and technical college systems, postsecondary institutions, employers, industry groups, Registered Apprenticeship and training programs, foundations, research and policy institutes, and credential standard-setting bodies.
