Mushtaq Gunja, Chief of Staff

Mushtaq Gunja is the Chief of Staff to the Under Secretary of Education where he provides strategic and policy advice on a range of issues. Prior to joining the Department, Mushtaq served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Baltimore, Maryland, where he prosecuted violent crime, gang, narcotics and health care fraud cases. In 2013, he was detailed to the White House Counsel’s Office, vetting Senate-confirmed Presidential appointees. Mushtaq started his legal career by clerking for United States District Court Judge Catherine C. Blake in the District of Maryland. Mushtaq has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland Law School in Baltimore and Washington Adventist University in Silver Spring. Mushtaq graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and History from Brown University and with a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
