OVAE hosted the second event in its 2013 Community College Webinar Series on Wednesday, April 10 in collaboration with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). This event focused on emerging community college correctional and reentry education models and the many contributions community colleges can make to promoting more effective reentry of incarcerated individuals. Over 160 stakeholders from community and technical colleges, correctional institutions, community based organizations, state and local government, four-year colleges and universities, federal government, and workforce development organizations took part in the webinar. For those of you who could not participate in the live event, or would like copies of the presentation, the recorded webinar and presentation will be archived in the coming days on OVAE’s website at www.ed.gov/ovae and we’ll let you know through this blog when that happens.
As Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier reflected on the event afterward, “What a fabulous webinar! The panelists were so insightful and shared so many really great resources with their colleagues in the field. Being able to highlight the experiences of both a currently and of a formerly incarcerated student was particularly special. Their stories help us to put a human face on our work and remind us how important it is to promote more effective transitions for incarcerated individuals back into society. We all know education and training is crucial to this effort. The three education programs highlighted in this webinar show the variety of ways community colleges can engage in this space and help individuals rebuild their lives and achieve their full potential.”
OVAE is looking forward to continuing its engagement with community colleges and other education stakeholders next month with an event that examines the role of community colleges in career pathways systems. More information on the third webinar in OVAE’s 2013 Community College Webinar Series, along with the registration link, will be shared in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
